One Book Holyoke 2010

Welcome to the 2010 One Book Holyoke Project. Since it's inception in 2006, our grass roots organization has provided programming for our community's participation in readings and other activities, theme centered around a universal title selection each year. Thanks go out to the Planning Committee and Project Collaborators for their dedication in reviewing potential titles and the final selection decision. Another big thanks goes out to the Big Read (The National Endowment for the Arts), grant sponsor for the second consecutive year.

One Book Holyoke seeks local soldiers for video project

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, is this year’s selection for One Book Holyoke.  This excellent novel offers the fictionalized perspective of one young soldier who was drafted into the Vietnam War.

One Book Holyoke seeks to connect the themes of our books with current people and events.  With this selection, particularly, we want to focus the community’s attention on local soldiers (and families) who are currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If you know someone who is currently serving in Operation Enduring Freedom who might be willing to record a video message to Western Massachusetts, please be in touch with Vivian Ostrowski, Holyoke Community College (vostrowski@hcc.edu, 413-552-2418) by August 13, 2010.

Part of our Opening event will focus on current soldiers sharing what they would like Holyoke readers and residents to know about war and their experiences.  With your help, the keynote speakers will be actual soldiers from Western Massachusetts recorded in the field.  They will record their messages to the community on video cameras to offer the entire community a glimpse into their perspective as soldiers in this war.  One Book Holyoke will supply the video equipment.
