One-Book Holyoke, a two-month long celebration of the power
of the written word, will host a series of events celebrating
Esmeralda Santiago’s moving and illuminating memoir When
I Was Puerto Rican:

Tuesday, March 11, 7 p.m. OFF THE
PAGE at Wistariahurst Museum: One-Book Holyoke
'08 kicks off with an evening of readings and a panel discussion
based on When I Was Puerto Rican. The evening will feature
community leaders including Roberto Marquez, scholar, author
and editor from Mount Holyoke College and youth readers
from the Teen Resource Project, among others. Book giveaways
and light refreshments will also be provided. Additional
copies of When I Was Puerto Rican will available for purchase.

BORICUA, PA'QUE TU LO SEPAS, at Holyoke Public Library:
The Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City jump-starts actress
and filmmaker Rosie Perez's witty and enlightening quest to
rediscover her Puerto Rican culture. The film combines Perez's
personal story and thought-provoking history. Narrated by

Tuesday, March 25, 7 p.m. Adio kerida
(GOODBYE DEAR LOVE), at Holyoke Community College,
Kittredge Room 301: One Book Holyoke and the Pioneer Valley
Jewish Film Festival are teaming up to host a viewing of ADIO
KERIDA, in which anthropologist Ruth Behar returns to her
native Cuba to profile the island's remaining Sephardic Jews
and chronicle her family's journey to the U.S. as Cuban-Jewish
exiles. Highlighting themes of expulsion and departure that
are at the crux of the Sephardic legacy, Behar seeks reconciliation
with Cubans and advocates for the possibility of return and

Ricans in Holyoke” exhibit, located on the
3rd floor of the Frost Building. Students from YouthBuild
Holyoke who created the exhibit will be the guests of honor.
The reception will be held in the 3rd floor lobby area and
refreshments will be served.
- 5 p.m., ECHANDO RAICES/TAKING ROOT, at
Café El Mercado, 413 Main Street Holyoke. In this
documentary immigrants from diverse countries tell stories

OF A MIGRANT FARMWORKER: A Film Screening and Discussion at
Holyoke Public Library, Community Room. This 28-minute
film by Wil Ecevarria and co-produced by WGBY-TV in Springfield
will be followed by a discussion about the film and how it

A LIFE, at Holyoke Public Library. Writing a Life
is documentary film portrait of best-selling author, Esmeralda
Santiago in the midst of a culture-sharing journey. Her ground
breaking memoirs, When I Was Puerto Rican, Almost A Woman
and The Turkish Lover have a transforming impact on the lives
of people she meets face to face?in book stores, universities,
urban schools, family shelters, libraries, prisons, and projects.
This film captures the irrepressible charisma of a woman who
is willing to do whatever it takes to open up debates on race,
culture and identity. Dreaming in Spanish, writing in English,
Ms. Santiago shares the joy and sorrow of living between two

St.: A local intergenerational story-gathering program will
culminate in this presentation by young mothers from The Care
Center and the older residents they interviewed in an effort
to record stories of migration and cultural transplantation
- Wednesday April 30, 7:00-9:30 p.m. ., A LITERARY FIESTA-AUTHOR
VISIT & CELEBRATION, United Congregational Church,
395 High Street, Holyoke. Celebrate One-Book Holyoke and our
honored guest, Esmeralda Santiago, author of When I Was Puerto
Rican, for an author reading, book signing and evening of music
and dance from the island at this celebration of literature
and community.
All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise
noted.
